How often should smoke alarms be replaced?
Smoke alarms should generally be replaced every 10 years from the date of manufacture, even if they still appear to work properly. Over time, the internal sensors degrade and become less effective at detecting smoke. It’s a good idea to check the date printed on the back of the alarm and schedule a replacement if it's nearing or past its lifespan. Regular testing and cleaning help maintain functionality, but they don't extend the device's effective lifespan. Battery-operated units and hardwired systems with backup batteries should have their batteries replaced annually. Always follow manufacturer recommendations for best performance and safety.
Where should smoke alarms be installed in a home?
Smoke alarms should be installed in key areas to provide early warning in the event of a fire. At minimum, place one in every bedroom, in hallways outside sleeping areas, and on each level of the home, including basements and attics if used frequently. Avoid installing alarms too close to kitchens or bathrooms, where steam or cooking smoke may trigger false alarms. Position them on the ceiling at least 30 centimetres away from corners or walls. For high ceilings or multi-storey homes, interconnected alarms are ideal, as they communicate across rooms. Always check your local regulations, as requirements may vary by state or territory.
Do smoke alarms need to be interconnected?
Interconnected smoke alarms are highly recommended, and in many states they are a legal requirement for new builds or renovations. These systems link all alarms in a property, so when one detects smoke, all the alarms sound simultaneously. This setup provides early warning throughout the home, especially in larger properties or homes with multiple levels. Interconnected alarms can be hardwired or wirelessly linked, making them suitable for both new and existing homes. They’re particularly important for protecting sleeping areas, ensuring that everyone hears the alert regardless of where the smoke originates. Always check your local legislation to ensure your alarms meet the latest standards.
